Chanel Spring/Summer 2016 Collection

To begin my research, examining the style of Chanel during its S/S 2016 collection is important in order to mimic its style for my project.

Chanel's S/S 2016 collection was based on luxury air travel. This meant that the clothes and accessories were all based on going away, for example women in tailored, tweed suits with Chanel suitcases, and men in suits that replicate those of air stewards.

Their ready to wear collection was unprovocative and not stereotypically youthful in their shapes and lengths. However to add excitement and youthfulness, Chanel used patterned fabrics that were extremely eye catching and intricate to give the middle aged silhouettes an eccentric, spring twist. In addition to this, youthful accessories were added, such as matching baseball caps, lavishes of jewellery and see-through platform heels that alluded to 1970's disco platforms. I think that Chanel were blending the historical, high class, old fashioned style with the emerging fashions of the 21st century. This matches perfectly with the theme of air travel; an ever expanding and growing technology that has been evolving since the age of Chanel.

Popular accessories during this show were pearls and metal clasps for the hair, which is something to note for my shoots.

When looking at the whole collection on the NowFashion website, it is apparent that the collection consisted of a lot of colours rather than just spring and summer associated colour palettes. For example some garments were covered in colour and intricate, tribal patterns, which contrasted with some of their black or white plain tweed suits. There were also pale blue and pink garments which were more suited for the spring and summer theme. However it was clear that there was also a contrast between the garments that were aimed for day and night, which was identifiable from their colours and shapes. Here are some examples of contrasting outfits from the collection:

It is safe to say that this collection was diverse in its inspirations and styles, however they all have some allusion to travelling whether it be inspiration from culture or outfits to wear while travelling. My course of action will be determining which styles are appropriate for which shoot, and in turn what kind of makeup look would suit these looks. I need to examine Chanel's editorial, advert and catwalk makeup and fashion for this collection in detail. These shoots are an important culmination of all of these elements and I have to make sure that I am aware of all of them in order to create to a high and Chanel inspired standard.
